The ECOCA School

What is the Ecoca School Kitchen?

The school kitchen project was realized in the Kyangwali refugee settlement in Uganda as part of the Camp+ initiative, a project initiated by Care with the goal of being the world’s most sustainable refugee settlement.
For many students in less privileged societies, the lunch break at school offers them their only (warm) meal during the entire day. It is therefore extremely important to make this meal as healthy, nutritious, and satiating for the children as possible.
This calls for kitchen facilities that are tailored to the cooking and eating requirements of a large group of young students, meaning enough energy to provide food for all students, as well as easy set-up and handling of appliances.

What makes our School Kitchen so special?

According to the data presented in the bar graph below, the tests conducted have demonstrated that the solar electric e-cooking system, the ECOCA School Kitchen, significantly reduces cooking time compared to traditional improved biomass institutional stoves. This notable efficiency gain can be attributed to two key factors: the utilization of preheated hot water as an initiation source for the cooking process and the incorporation of insulative pots, which effectively mitigate heat loss. As a result of these advancements, not only does the e-cooking system enhance cooking efficiency, but it also yields substantial time savings.

Three of the most commonly cooked meals in Uganda are beans, posho, meat, and rice. The vertical axis illustrates the amount of time it takes to cook each type of food. As evident, biomass stoves require more time for cooking various meals, whereas the ECOCA School Kitchen not only reduces cooking time but also facilitates time-saving in the cooking process.
